My New Blog

Hi, I am beginning a new blog as District Superintendent of the Cascadia District of the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. After 10 months in this job I figured I now have a few things to share and say. So, I am ready once more to muse my musings and let you in on what I am thinking, feeling, hoping, wondering, anxious, and uncertain about concerning life, the universe and everything.

These entries will not necessarily be connected to my work as a DS though I am sure that work will come up. I see this blog as a way to share myself with you. It is meant to be my thoughts and perspectives. It is what I wonder about or feel or am worried about. It is a way to let you get to know me.

Once in awhile I will share "official" stuff, links to articles, comments by people, positions of the UMC and such. Occasionally I will reproduce something someone else has shared that I find worthy of passing along. And rarely I will reproduce something I have written before - either in another blog or a column from a newsletter or whatever. But for the most part this will be my own stuff that reflects what is on my mind and heart and soul right now.

To start then I need to introduce myself. I am a white male. I turn 60 in September. I am firmly in the socio-economic middle class. I am heterosexual. I have been married for 34 years the end of May. I place myself within the progressive end of the political spectrum. All my adult life I have advocated for the full inclusion of all people in the life and ministry of the church. As I write these blogs you will get a better idea of what my values and beliefs are but at my core I believe that love is what matters and that God loves everyone - no exceptions, no requirements, no limitations. I believe that what God truly wants from me is to work to transform lives and the world right here and right now. Christianity isn't about getting a ticket for the elevator to heaven, it's about transforming lives - making the world a better place so that all God beloved can live up to their fullest potential.

I will bring this to a close. I plan to blog every couple of weeks but life may get in the way so let's just say I will blog regularly. I would love for you to share your comments. I may not reply to them all but know that I will read them.

I hope that as time goes on you will find this blog worthy of your attention. My goal isn't to convince you of anything, it's to share who I am and what I think and feel and believe. If you disagree with me that is fine - the world needs diversity and especially diversity of opinion - just don't be mean as I will try hard not to be mean too.

Until next time - may God go with you!
